WAR TIME SAVINGS (To the Editor.) Sir. —In last Saturday’s "Times-Age" the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, was stressing the need of economy in the use of sugar. In the same paper a meeting of farmers to consider increased production was reported. Mr Polson was asking for more barley to be grown for feeding pigs. I suggest that the Minister restricts the waste of both sugar and barley in the manufacture of beer, the use of which is a still greater waste in health and life and a cause of inefficiency in industry. which the country can ill afford at any lime. In 1938 New Zealand spent over £9,000,000 in liquor. (I have not the figures for 1939).
