GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 22. The decision of the Federal Government to allow the sale of 5000 tons of New Zealand potatoes on the Australian market this year has had no strengthening effect on prices to growers. Wednesday's quotations are still at the low levels of £2 10s to £2 15s a ton. The maximum price of £4 10s f.o.b. fixed by order issued this week is equivalent to about £3 to farmers. Most merchants are still of the opinion that the export of 5000 tons, which is to begin next month, will make but little different to the market, since reports from growers indicate record yields. Consequently there will be a substantial surplus, probably several times greater than the amount which Australia has decided to take. Merchants have not yet been informed of the arrangements the Government is making for the marketing of potatoes. Other produce markets are quiet at unchanged prices.
