HOCKEY

NOTES ON SATURDAY’S GAMES. The men’s and ladies’ competitions were advanced a stage further on Saturday under ideal conditions. The local teams gave a good account of themselves. Although the juniors were beaten by the very big margin of 14 to 7, the game was not a runaway one. On the face of it there was evidently some weakness among both sets of backs. The local team are to be congratulated on their effort in the second half when they scored 6 goals to their opponents 3. Bouzaid, in goal, gave a very good account of himself indeed. He has become a versatile player, and can play well as a back or a forward, displaying good ball control in both positions. The Scouts were beaten I—nil1 —nil in a game which was keenly contested. Again and again Hobson saved his side with splendid work; but all the team showed that “do or die” spirit which has carried them along so splendidly to date. College A, who defeated them, have so far been unbeaten. The Rev. Mayson was the referee in the junior game and the thanks of the players are due to him for performing such a difficult and tiring task so well. The third grade game also saw a deficiency in referees, and the game was held up until Mr R. Eaton so generously offered his assistance. It is very pleasing to know that such keen interest is being displayed by some nonplayers. The ladies, playing at Masterton, secured a comfortable win of 9 —2 against College Old Girls. The latter team is to be congratulated upon the fight they put up. The Greytown players are developing good understanding and even better positional play. One very pleasing feature was the work of the left inside, who, by good following in, scored her first goal.

The next two games will test the local ladies to their fullest extent. Next week they will meet College A, and the following week Excelsior. At present the local team is second to Excelsior. who beat them last round (3 —1). But the College team is a much stronger combination than when Greytown met them last time, and they are keen to haul down Greytown’s colours. Besides that, the match will be played in Masterton, and it remains to be seen whether the local ladies can perform as well as on their own ground.
