GROWING OF BARLEY
WAIRARAPA’S ALLOTMENT AT LEAST FIVE THOUSAND ACRES. IMMEDIATE PLOUGHING ESSENTIAL As announced by Mr W. J. Polson. M.P.. and Mr A. Cockayne, DirectorGeneral of the Department of Agriculture, it has been found essential for North Island growers to sow an area of up to 30,000 acres of barley for threshing this summer, in order to supply the demand for pig and poultry food, states Mr N. Lamont, chairman of the Masterton Primary Production Council. To do its share, the Wairarapa must grow at least 5000 acres of barley, as well as increase to a much lesser extent the area in wheat arid oats. Ploughing for this crop should be carried orit without any delay, in anticipation of August and September sowings. This is one aspect of the increased production campaign that needs no further discussion and no one need fear that too great an acreage will be sown as the Government has undertaken to take all the barley produced at a price, yet to be fixed, but which will ensure a reasonable return to the grower. •Prospective growers will assist by placing their orders for seed early and the importation of sufficient for the required area has already been arranged.
