The favourites were routed in the Taipua Handicap at Otaki on Saturday. Nereus at odds of over a score to win. being first home. Nereus began well after there had been a lot of messing about at the start, but Gold Chase streaked away clear down the back and on the turn and set a pace that had most of the topweights in trouble a long' way from home. Nereus took charge again into the straight when Gold Chase weakened and was always the winner, though Lady Tinkle, who ran a good race for a fresh horse, was overhauling him at the end. Vivacious finished well clear of the fancied Royal Star II for third, the latter just beating sleeveless, neither ever dangerous. The joint favourite Notium ran a wretched race in the rear throughout.

An Exciting Finish. Winsome Lu won the Ta Timi Kara Handicap at Otaki on Saturday on the post from Aurora’s Star, being vigorously ridden by Wiggins, who had taken her out into the middle of the track. Galteemore made most of the running, and when he weakened after six or seven furlongs Liane became prominent. Aurora's Star and Winsome Lu headed oil' Liane at the top of the straight, and they drew right away to fight out the finish. Tidewaiter, who shared favouritism with Colonel Bogey, was one of the rear division early. He became more prominent down the back stretch, and on the turn, but, while he ran on to get third from Liane. he was never a possibility, nor was Colonel Bogey, who ran a surprisingly poor race at the rear of the field. Hot Box Strikes Form. The- four-year-old Hot Box, who has not done a great deal of racing since winning the Poland Cup in Paeroa in September, staged a return to form by scoring very decisively in the Woodstock Stakes at the Waipa meeting on Saturday. The field left to a good start and the early leaders were Armacourt, Jayola and Prival. Turning along the back Armacourt was out three lengths from Prival, Jayola and' Erlick, with Hot Box making a move on the outside. Before reaching the top Erlick dashed into the lead and he came into the straight three lengths ahead of Hot Box, Silver Cloud and Erndale. Once in a line for the post Hot Box assumed the lead, and he won by two and a half lengths from Philemup, who finished solidly to beat Silver Cloud by a head. Erlick, who tired quickly, was almost in the line fourth.

Death of Manfred. A Melbourne cable states that the death has occurred of one of Australia’s greatest racehorses, Manfred, who sired some of the best horses at present in training.
