SURCOAT SUCCESSFUL. OUTSIDER WINS MAYFIELD HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON. June 22. For the Ashburton races there was fine weather and' the attendance was large. The course was in good order. The totalisator handled £14,715 against £13,378 10s last year. The Steeplechase was marred by an extraordinary accident in front of the stewards’ stand. Mount Vai ran into the corner wing of the brush, falling against the railings. Culverden. Flashlight and Court Yard crashed on top of the horse and brush, the railings giving way, leaving the horses in a kicking heap. C. J. Jennings, rider of Mount Vai, suffered bad concussion and was admitted to hospital. Mount Vai broke a shoulder, being destroyed. Details: —

Good Win by Dauber. The each-way favourite Dauber scored a convincing win the W. G. Parle Steeplechase at the Waipa meeting on Saturday. After following King Rcy. London, and Floodlight, Dauber went to life front about six furlongs from homo and led into the straight from Floodlight, London and Biform, with the others some lengths back. Dauber jumped the last fence boldly and he won by five lengths from Floodlight, who Defeated. London by half a length. Biform was a moderate fourth, followed by Smiling Thru. King Rey and Forest Glow.
