OTAKI MEETING
WINSOME LU WINS. NEREUS CAUSES SENSATION? (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OTAKI, June 23. Favoured by a fine bright day the Otaki Maori Racing Club concluded its season’s activities very successfully on Saturday with the second winter meeting. Good fields provided interesting racing, and punters found it hard to keep up with the winning form, there being three double-figure dividends, two of them of handsome proportions. The principal race, Ta Timi Kara Handicap, was won narrowly by the Hawera-owned and trained mare Winsome Lu which has run very consistently for a long time, -and the second leg, the Taipua Handicap saw a surprise win by the cast-off Nereus, who is now running for his fourth owner. The only actual favourite to win was El Meynell in the hurdle race, but another win favourite in First Round divided honours in the second division of the Waikanae Scurry while Hagen in the last race was an equal favourite. The going was soft and slow, and in patches, heavy. There was a good attendance and the .totalisator handled £19,053 (win £9061 J 10s, place £9991 10s), compared with I £17,142 10s last June (single pool) an increase of £l9lO 10s. There was a lag in the timetable and the last race was run 30 minutes late, but there was still plenty of light for the horses and jockeys. The delay was mostly due to the large fields which prevented quick dispatches. Results:— Rangiuru Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. About 2\ miles. 5/5 Game Pit, car 9.3 (S. A.
