WEEKLY MEETING ADDRESS BY AUSTRALIAN DEBATER. The weekly meeting of the Masterton Optimist Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night. Chief Smiler Murray Danniel presided over a large attendance of members and visitors.

Sheriff E. J. Esler made several charges in his session, without material assistance to the "cat," however.

Optimist Stuart Hatch led in the song session. Optimist Trevor Hicks presiding at the piano. Mr G. G. Hancox, principal of Wairarapa College, introduced the speakers of the evening, Messrs A. M. Jenkins and D. Campbell, the visiting Australian debaters, who made their first public appearance on their New Zealand tour. Owing to indisposition. Mr Campbell was unable to give his address.

Taking as his subject "Conscience and Society,” Mr Jenkins delivered an interesting address on his observations of a group of 500 people in his study of psychology. The speaker outlined the early beginnings of conscience in the young child, commencing with the teaching of the parents which he showed gradually was absorbed into the intellect to become conscience.

Mr Jenkins quoted examples from his studies to stress the points he made, stating the motives underlying the effect of conscience on society.

At the conclusion of his address the speaker answered several questions. On the motion of Optimist M. Finlayson a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Jenkins and his colleague.
