FUTURE POLICY
WAIRARAPA PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION EFFECT OF PRESENT WAR. ANNUAL MEETING HELD TODAY. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Patriotic Association was held in the Savage Club rooms. Masterton, this morning. Mr Duncan McGregor presided, there also being present Mrs J. M. Coradine, Miss H. Card (Featherston), Sir William Perry, Messrs H. M. Boddington, W. G. Lamb. Hugh Morrison, A. H. Herbert, J. B. Carruthers (Eketahuna), W. T. Armstrong, R. R. Burridge, A. Forsberg, H. J. Brass, S. J. W. Gill, C. R. Holmes (Martinborough), W. Candy, T. F. Watson, A. W. Horton (Greytown) and the secretary, Mr A. E. Prentice.
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Robertson, B. Roberts, M.’sP., A. B. Martin (Martinborough), W. H. Booth (Carterton), B. Morriss 1 (Eketahuna), J. W. Card (Featherston), H. Mortenson (Carterton) and Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Irving (Trentham). “When one thinks of the awful time the people of the countries who have been overrun are having, and the good times we are having here, many of us think we should be contributing on the same basis as in the last war,” stated Mr McGregor in commenting on the subscriptions being made in patriotic funds. “There is not the enthusiasm for giving this time,” he said. Mr McGregor stated that in the last war £12,802 had been collected for the Red Cross, and £11,400 for the Y.M.C.A. in the district. Mr McGregor pointed out the advantages, from several aspects, of taking orphan children as refugees. The following executive committeewas set up for the ensuing year: Boroughs—(Masterton) Mr T. F. Subscriptions, Messrs A. McDonald, D. McGregor. Considerable discussion arose concerning the association’s future policy in light of the present war. It was stressed by Mr Hugh Morrison and other speakers that the funds were only for the soldiers of the last war. ,Sir William Perry pointed out that if funds were required there would be the usual generous response. Colonel Herbert considered that the association should consolidate its funds. Mi’ R. R. Burridge stressed the fact that the Claims Board considered every case on , its merits alone. \ Mr Prentice stated that under the regulations gazetted the National Patriotic Fund Board would control a board which would administer the, funds to repatriate returned men.
EXECUTIVE MEET. MR BODDINGTON APPOINTED CHAIRMAN. At a subsequent meeting of the exective the election of the officers resulted: Chairman and treasurer, Mr H. M. Boddington; Claims Board, Messrs R. R. Burridge, G. C. Williams, Hugh Morrison, H. J. Brass, W. G. Lamb, H. M. Boddington, D. McGregor, H. Mortenson, A. McDonald, T. F. Watson, and Lt. Colonel J. H. Irving. Mr Boddington moved that appreciation of Mr McGregor’s services as chairman for the past 10 years, and on the association since its inception, be placed on record. The motion was carried with acclamation. Reference was made to the work of Lt Colonel Irving, who is taking part in his second war. He was granted leave of absence and congratulated on his appointment. Mr Hugh Morrison moved a vote of thanks to those who were carrying on with the work of the association. The speaker made reference to the work of Mrs J. M. Coradine and Miss H. Card, stating that people in the district were not aware of the part they had played in the raising of funds in the last war. Mr Morrison stated they were the most faithful workers of all and had never ceased the great and noble work they were doing in going to Wellingtin and visiting incapacitated soldiers. The motion was carried by acclamation. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mi’ Morriss of Eketahuna in his illness and to wish him a speedy recovery.
