MENACE OF MARGARINE
THREAT TO NEW ZEALAND
BUTTER
A New Zealander in a good position in London has written to the New Zealand Dairy Board pointing out the menace of margarine to the Dominion butter trade. The outspoken comments in his letter are refreshing. Here are a few excerpts: “Margarine with vitamin content equal to butter is all the rage here at the moment, 8d a lb. Retailers with butter stocks against ration coupons find each week the butter they ordered only partly sold, and margarine taken instead. I know any number of homes, well-to-do, who never take their butter ration; its all margarine, and I tell you after the war New Zealand will have a gigantic job getting back her butter business; and it shows how crazy your Dairy Board is in dropping advertising altogether. You should do what Rolls-Royce are doing —‘prestige’ advertising. Say that Nev/ Zealand butter and cheese are being made in greater quantities for export to the Old Country at per cwt. (state the price you are getting) f.o.b. New Zealand, and that New Zealand hopes the British public will remember that the high price asked for it is not going
into the New Zealand farmer’s pockets. * Gutter here,is Is 7d a lb., and if your Board doesn’t wake up it will lose most of the market to margarine.”
