WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OPAKI MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The June meeting of the Opaki ’Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Wingate. In the absence of the president, through illness. Mrs Wingate (vice-president) presided. The meeting gave very full consideration to the different views which have been put forward in reference to the holding of the conference in July. It was the unanimous opinion of the institute that the meeting should not be held. Reasons given were that members of institutes were fully occupied with patriotic activities, and that the raising of the necessary fin- j ance was almost impossible when all I efforts were directed to patriotic ends. It was felt that the will of the institutes could be economically expressed by correspondence and by postal ballots.

A very interesting demonstration on the making of raffia and flax baskets was given by a party of ladies from the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute led by Mrs Gallon.

The motto illustrated wps supplied by Mrs Marchbank —"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.”

The competitions resulted: Garment for child, 4-6 years: Miss lorns 1. Mrs Miller 2, Mrs Buick 3. Best bloom, Mrs Buick 1, Mrs Miller 2.

Subscriptions for the Red Cross Society were taken by Mrs Wingate and contributions for soldiers’ parcels by Miss lorns. The July meeting will be held at the home of Mrs N. Wyeth. The sewing competition will be a garment for a child 6 to 8 years of age.

Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
