BASKETBALL.
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION SATURDAY’S GAMES. NOTES AND COMMENTS. A good standard of play was in evidence in most of the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s competition games on Saturday. The games were keenly contested and the form shown by the younger players is very gratifying. Particularly is this noticeable in team work, the players now paying more attention to combination than to individual effort. Results nt a glance:— A Grade. Collegians 18. College 8. Stars 34. Carterton 2. lona A by default of Greytown. B Grade. College B 12, Stars B 11. Belvedere 24, Stars C 0. NOTES ON THE PLAY.
Although the Collegians were the better team. College were by no means outclassed in field play. The experience of the Collegians’ team told on the younger players, but it was pleasing to see that they played with more confidence than the previous week against a stronger team. Play began in a brisk manner. Collegians scoring the first goal after a few minutes. College then secured a goal, equalising the score. The centres of both teams had a hard struggle, those deserving particular mention being B. Renner for Collegians and J. Russell and E. McLaren for College. On the whole College had the advantage in the centre. J, Gemmell was in very good form, helping to pile up the score for Collegians. M. Baskiville and D. Stevenson supported J. Gemmell well. Both teams played short passing and gave a good display of the game. S. Duley, a promoted College girl, shot some fine goals and justified her promotion.
Carterton was outclassed in every department of the game by the Stars. Their throwing in the goal third was wild on many occasions and opportunities to score were lost. M. Gadsby and A. Burgess played well. M. Rutherford (Star centre) deserves praise for her excellent field play. E. Hammond has a very accurate eye and only missed one out of the numerous goals which she potted. B. Hack is the best player in. her team. The Carterton team members are io be complimented on the neatness of their uniform.
The College B v Stars B game was a keen struggle and the issue was in doubt right up to the final whistle. This game was well up to the standard of an A grade match. Both teams gave of their best and a good, open and short passing game resulted, all the players using every ounce of energy to win. The College forwards did good work and played a fighting game throughout. Joan Hanley played excellently in the defence for College. The three forwards of Stars combined well. Stars C need not be downhearted because of their defeat. Belvedere has not had a loss yet, and if the team continues to win they should consider applying for admission to the A grade. TRIAL GAME.
