CARTERTON

OBITUARY WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) After an illness extending over 10 years there passed away at the Greytown Hospital on Saturday a wellknown and highly respected settler, in the person of Mr Frank Smith, at the age of 73 years. Deceased was born at Wagga, New South Wales, and came to New Zealand when a young man. For years he followed the occupation of a stock dealer, being a well-known figure in this connection at Featherston and afterwards at Carterton. Ten years ago he was smitten with a serious illness and has been an invalid ever since. Nine months ago he entered Greytown hospital. Mr Smith did not take any active part in public affairs, but was for some time a steward of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society. His wife predeceased him two years ago. A family of two sons, Messrs Frazer Smith, of Wellington, and Duncan Smith, of Lincoln Road, Carterton, and one daughter, Miss Ethel Jean, of the nursing staff of the Masterton Hospital, are left. They will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

FUNERAL ON SATURDAY. The funeral of the late Mr Charles Edward Savill took place on Saturday afternoon at the Clareville Cemetery, there being a very large cortege to pay a last tribute of respect to a one who was held in very high esteem. The motor cars at the funeral numbered fully 100. Before the funeral procession left his late residence a short service was conducted by the Rev Canon Sykes of St Mark’s Church, Greytown. Canon Sykes also officiated at the graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs J. Blair (Wellington), H. B. Keenan, R. P. Wakelin, L. Knutson, W. Gregor and S. Hill. Wreaths were forwarded among others by the chairman and members of the Wairarapa Power Board, Carterton. staff of the Power Board, staffs of the Featherston and Martinborough branches of the Power Board. Church of England Men’s Club, and the Bowling Club. A number of telegrams, letters and cards of sympathy were received by the widow.

WIN FOR CARTERTON. The following is the result of the match played between Carterton and Greytown A teams on Saturday at Carterton. Carterton won six of the singles and lost two, arrtl lost three of the fourball matches and halved one. The results were as follow: —Carterton players being mentioned first in each case: G. S. George beat J. Feast, J. Steel beat T. Nelson; B. Booth beat F. Bunny; W. Moroney lost to H. W. Feast; D. Taverner beat E. Maddison; T. Hughes beat H. Feast; D. Taylor lost to T. Gold; R. Harrington beat H. Bull. In the final for the Yule Cup H. Dudson beat G. George 2 up. In the final of the first flight, Larsen beat Whitburn. LADIES’ GOLF The best scores handed in for the club medal round played by the ladies on Saturday were:—Mrs Pointon, 98-36-62; Mrs Dwane, 92-24-68; Miss Lamb, 94-24-70; Mrs Ross, 95-24-71; Miss Robinson, 100-29-71; Miss N. HUSBANDS’ NIGHT

GATHERING AT PARKVALE. A very happy gathering was held in the Parkvale Hall on Friday evening when the annual “husbands’ night” of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was jjiyid. There was a large attendance of local members, husbands and families as well as a number of visitors and members of the Dalefield Women's Institute. An excellent concert programme commenced with the singing of the anthem “Comrades and Friends” followed by a prayer for peace. The items which followed were interspersed with games, dancing and competitions. A pianoforte solo was given by Miss M. Stent. The Singing Circle sang “You Will Remember Vienna” and “Run, Adblph Run,” those taking part were Misses S. Rayner, M. Stent N. Williams and L. Rayner, who were dressed in long frocks of gold and maroon, the Institute colours. They were assisted by Mrs N. Peacock and Mrs C. V. Downes. Miss S. Rayner took the solo part of the first number and Mrs R. Williams capably accompanied the first chorus. Mrs K. Hodder entertained with a monologue, which was followed by a play entitled “Early Birds,” by members of the Carterton Women’s Division, the characters being taken by Mesdames J. Archer, M. E. Mellish, D. Walsh, K. Hodder. A. StrfAtbn and Misses B. Ordish and A. Hodder. Songs were rendered by Mrs N. Peacock and Miss L. Rayner. This was followed by community singing. Miss V. Thomas delighted the audience with her singing of four numbers. The chorus girls gave two more items later, these being “Kiss Mis Goodnight Sergeant Mayor” and “Wish Me Luck." Miss N. Williams sang the verse "The Sergeant Major.” dressed in a soldier’9 uniform. Miss M. Peacock recited very nicely. Each contributor to the programme was presented with a shoulder spray by the president. Mrs B. Renall. Much amusement was caused in connection with a gift parcel, the winner being Mr J. Court. A musical competition arranged by Miss M. Stent, was won by Miss L. Rayner. Another com-

petition, arranged by Mrs B. Renall. was won by Miss M. Peacock. During the evening a presentation was made by Mrs B. Renall to one of the Institute members, Miss Brassell who is shortly to be married. Mrs Renall spoke of the good work done by Miss Brassell for the Institute and said she hoped Miss Brassell would continue to lake an interest in the Institute after her wedding. On behalf of members she handed Miss Brassell a pyrex dish. The singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” followed. Dancing was then resumed, the music being supplied by Mesdames R. Williams D. Adams, J. James and Misses E. Martin and M. Stent. A Lucky Gay Gordon was won by Miss M.' Adlam and Mr M. Rose. A sucking pig donated by Mr and Mrs J. Rayner .and a cake donted by Mrs J. Taplin 'were won by Miss J Knowles and Mr K. Hodder, respectively, the proceeds in connection with which totalled £5 2s and will be used for the purchase of wool for knitting comforts for soldiers. Supper and the singing of the National Anthem concluded a most enjoyable gathering. Borough Council. A special meeting to consider the estimates for the ensuing year .will be held in the Council Chambers tomorrow evening at 7.30 o'clock. /' Indoor Bowls. Carterton players will meet members of the Masterton Indoor Bowling Club in a match in the band room, Carterton tomorrow night, commencing at 7.30 o’clock. Members of the Carterton team are asked to bring a “plate.” Combined Ball. The King’s Theatre, Carterton. will be the scene of a combined ball to be held tonight under the auspices of the Carterton branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, NewZealand Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club. Very large and enthusiastic committeees are controlling the function and have all arrangements well in hand. As the net proceeds will be given to the patriotic funds there should be a very large attendance. Udy’s dance band will provide the music and an excellent floor and supper are assured. Prices are advertised. Personal Items. Mr S. Whyte, son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Whyte, of Tyne Street, Carterton. is on a visit to Carterton. Mr Whyte is on the staff of the Stratford Post Office. Mr W. Stoodley, who recently underwent an operation in the Greytown Hospital, has found it necessary to reenter the hospital for treatment.

Mrs D. L. Taverner, who has been spending a holiday in the Gisborne district, has returned to Carterton. The Rev W. F. Stent, who has been laid aside by illness is improving.
