WELFARE LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING APPOINTMENT OF WOMAN OFFICER URGED. PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS. The monthly meeting of the Women s National Welfare League was held in the Midland Hotel yesterday afternoon. Those present were Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames Collie, Coradine Andrew, A. W. McKenzie, Free. Hunter, Fletcher, Drummond. Kilgour, Watson, Hunn, Daniell. Glen. Misses Cameron and Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Pither, McCracken, Charleson, Coleman, Corskie, Harrison, and Miss Guild. As the Hospital Board has decided to put up a see-saw instead of a sand pit for the inmates of the children's ward the League agreed to donate the amount which would have been spent on sand towards the cost of the seesaw. ’

The urgent need of a permanent woman Welfare Officer for the Wairarapa district was brought before the League and it was decided that tho Child Welfare Department be asked to make an appointment. Mrs Fletcher reported that the Hospital. Board had agreed that in cases of genuine hardship the Board had decided to make arrangements for the free conveyance of outpatients to the Hospital for treatment. Patients should communicate with the Managing-Sec-retary (Mr Lee). Mrs Drummond, as a member of the Townswomen's Guild, asked that the League approve of the Guild’s selection of Mrs Harrison as J.P. and Mrs Pither as J.P. in connection with Juvenile Court work.

Miss Kummer, as delegate to the Patriotic Committee, asked for parcels, to be forwarded through the Patriotic Committee, to men on active service. The parcels are to contain pipe and cigarette tobaccos, cigarettes, soap (in a tin), handkerchiefs, razor blades, writing materials (envelopes, pad, ink pencil) and a tin of one of the following: Milk, coffee, chocolate, fruit, honey, cake or sweets. Miss Kummer also distributed material for pay-book covers and hussifs to be sewn.

The Hospital visitors for June 11 and 25 will be Mesdames Hunter, Drummond, Collie and Misses Kummer and Cameron. A visit to the Buchanan Home will be paid on June 20. Final arrangements for the trip are in the hands of Mrs Munn and Miss Kummer.

Mrs McKenzie reported on the Social Welfare work for the month and the assistance given to several needy cases. The thanks of the League were passed to Miss D. Wyber for a gift of clothing and reading matter, and to Miss Nina Boddington for paper.
