WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

COMPETITION WINNERS. Mrs Fraser presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute on Thursday.

The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by “The Prayer for Peace” and “The Ode to Friendship.” Members from the Hamua Institute were welcomed. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Petersen (Pleckville) who is very ill.

Delegates were appointed to call on Mr Wimsett to discuss and arrange about beautifying the railway station. A collection of 6d per member was taken to provide more parcels to send overseas to the fighting forces. Mrs Albrectsen read the motto for the month: "A cheerful heart is like a sunny day. good for everybody.” A roll call: "What I would do if I were president,” was most amusing. Hamua members demonstrated the making of seagrass stools. Miss Shutz gave an elocution item, “A Visit to the Dentist.” This was much appreciated. Mrs Herbert and Mrs Murray-Ayns-ley judged the competition for pikelets. There were nineteen entries and the placings were as follow: Mrs Tolley 1, Mrs Robinson 2, Mrs Fraser 3. Mrs Biddle (Hamua) judged the man’s buttonhole (twenty-seven entries). Mrs Fraser and Mrs Baucke tied for first place, Miss Hooper being second arid Mrs Richardson third. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Albrectsen, Hansen and Miss Mitchell. The meeting closed with the singing of the New Zealand Anthem.
