DONKEY RAFFLED
SUM OF £55 15s REALISED. CHILDREN’S FINE EFFORT. The raffling of a donkey in aid of the Red Cross and St John Sick and Wounded Fund realised £55 15s net. This exceptionally fine result was achieved by the children of Masterton schools, who sold tickets for the laft’le, which was held under the auspices of the Masterton Headteachers’ Association. The donkey was donated, by Mr Levin and the winner is “Budgie Jack,” Albert Street, Masterton, ticket number 984 H. The drawing of the raffle took place this morning in the presence of the president of the local branch of the Red Cross Society, Mr Norman Lee, the secretary of the Trust Lands Trust, Mr Alex McKenzie and members of the Headteachers’ Association. If the winner hands his ticket to Mr J. W. T. Jones, headmaster of the Lansdowne School, authority will be given to take possession of the donkey. The effort of all responsible is much appreciated by the societies concerned in the appeal.
OVER £4OOO MARK. TOTAL OF MASTERTON FUND. The proceeds from the raffle of the donkey brought the total of the Masterton Sick and Founded Fund, in response to the appeal by the Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance, to over the --£4OOO mark. The total this morning is £4032 6s lid. ■ Other offers continue to come in, including an aviary of budgerigars and a well-bred bull palf, suitable for breeding purposes. The fund is also being swelled by a £5O donation as the Masterton office’s contribution from the £5OO given by 'Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co Ltd while an instalment of 13s 3d from Rooms 1 and 3, Central School, indicates that the young people are active. Other classes at the school are working on ideas to bring in further funds. '
