Good Performances.

Two good performances were registered at the Auckland meeting by Hirangi, who was narrowly beaten with 11.7 in the Hunt Club Hurdles and ran third in the Great Northern Steeplechase. After the latter contest he was very distressed and it is believed that his condition was partially due to a piece of dirt lodging in his throat and affecting his breathing. Immediately the impediment was cleared he recovered quickly and was seemingly all right the next day. All going well, Hirangi should be capable of an important success over country, and he may be one of the early fancies for the Wellington Steeplechase. Improved Forth. Regular schooling has wrought improvement in Clahsihan, and he showed his first glimpse of form when he finished second to Floodlight in the Tarnaki Steeplechase at Auckland. In the past he has been delicate and difficult to condition, but he seems to be becoming more solid, and success as a jumper should not be beyond him. Clansman is by Vaals from Judy Kelly, a full-sister to the good performer Kelly, and he is bred well enough to be capable of better deeds. Past his best. Arctic Star looked well at Wingatui, but taking a line through his two races, he does not appear likely to earn any further distinction over country.
