CARE OF REFUGEES
GOOD WORK OF SALVATION ARMY. HEAVY LOSSES SUFFERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Cabled advice, that seventeen destroyed work centres had to be abandoned during the Allies’ retreat has been received by the Salvation Army headquarters. The Salvationists’ loss is estimated at £25,000. One woman worker was killed by a bomb splinter, while sheltering in a field. Numerous other officers had miraculous escapes, many losing all their belongings. On the south-east coast, in London, Paris and elsewhere Salvationists devoted their full resources to caring for and feeding evacuated troops and refugees. The staffs, saw large groups of I men fast asleep, as they stood, while! the pitiable suffering of refugees m Northern France seemed unending. Many, footsore and bleeding, reached Paris, after walking 120 miles. Hundreds were washed, bandaged and provided with beds and meals.
