AN IMPERATIVE NEED
ELIMINATION OF WASTE
ADDRESS BY MINISTER OF SUPPLY.
SOME SUGGESTED SAVINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.,. WELLINGTON. This Day. “To eliminate, or to avoid waste it very necessary when constant supplie. of essential goods are assured, bid in the circumstances of war conditions when the maintenance of supplies is ; constant anxiety, it becomes an imperative necessity." said the Ministe: of Supply, Mr Sullivan, in an address last night. “The Government has decided tha this matter must receive the attention its importance undoubtedly warrants.’ he said. "The institution and administration of the necessary measures and procedure designed to secure the elimination of waste and the most effectivt organisation of industry with the object of maintaining and expanding production, is a responsibility which rests upon me in my capacity as Minister of Supply and also as Minister of Indus tries and Commerce. The success cl the effort will entirely depend upon the co-operation of all the people in the Dominion and on that basis I am confident that we can expect complete success in the least time possible. “Waste is not confined to any particular sphere, though it may, and does differ in form and extent in the respective spheres in which we work ant live. In the home, in public institutions in the workshop and factory, in the shop, office, warehouse, store, in oil’ constructional work, we will find op portunity to eliminate waste in mater ials and methods and to salvage wash that is inevitably associated with many of our activities, but which ceases t< be waste at the point where it is sal vaged for re-use.
"The value of that waste material discarded implements, fittings ant:’ apparatus—which can be found aboir so many honies, shops, factories, and farms, may seem negligible in itself but in the aggregate, waste in its many forms will provide raw material for new production of very considerable proportions and value at a time when some raw materials for much needed production are, or are likely to be, in short supply.”
