KNITTING WOOL
USE OF SPINNING WHEELS SUGGESTED. OCCUPATION FOR WOMEN & GIRLS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Days of the spinning wheel and the distaff may be revived in New Zealand as a result of the shortage of knitting wool for making garments for the troops. At the Wellington Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, the suggestion was made by Mr M. G. C. McCaul that women should be encouraged to spin wool into worsted for knitting. A committee was appointed to look into the question. “I see no reason why the women and girls of the country should not adopt this old-fashioned occupation,” said Mr McCaul. Women often felt that men appropriated all the real jobs, and left little of value for them to do. He felt that throughout New Zealand women would jump at such an opportunity of being of real service, making the worsted and knitting it into garments and articles for the troops. It was just a question whether they could locate a suitable manufacturer, and instructors in different centres. After some discussion, it was decided to set up a committee comprising Messrs McCaul, Campbell, Harcourt, E. Sheed. and Miss Harper, to look into the matter.
