AUCKLAND APPEAL
ON BEHALF OF REFUGEE CHILDREN.
READY RESPONSE REPORTED
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. June 3,
There was a ready response to the request by the Mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, that all those citizens who were prepared to provide homes for refugee children from England or war zones should register their names at the Town Hall.
A special office was opened this afternoon for receipt of names to be entered on the register and when the office closed for the day, homes had been offered to 48 children.
The purpose of the register is to ascertain the number of children citizens of Auckland would be able to assist, either by providing them with temporary or permanent homes, or by permanently adopting them. The Government is now considering the possibility of bringing orphan children of the Allies to New Zealand, and should a scheme of this nature be adopted it is hoped there will be sufficient homes in Auckland or the province ready to receive the children allotted to this area. The Mayor headed the list with an undertaking to provide a home for two orphan children and several of those who also added their names to the register expressed their willingness to care for two children.
Early in the day a communication was received from the secretary of the Manurewa Children's Home to the effect that his board would be-pleased to offer accommodation for 10 children under the age of eight years.
