NATIONAL GUARD
DENIAL OF AUSTRALIAN REPORT.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, June 3.
The Prime Minister. Mr Menzies, today deprecated the idea of forming an Australian national guard. He said that as far as he was concerned the stories of its formation were completely speculative.
A Sydney message published yesterday stated: The Federal Government will call for 60.000 volunteers to form a national service guard for the defence of vital points. Men who are not eligible for active service, but who arcprepared to handle a rifle, are wanted. The guard will be under the orders of the Commissioner of Police in each State, not under military command.
