CARTERTON

SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee was held last evening. There were present: Messrs H. J. McKenzie (chairman), W. E. Knowles (seci'etary), J. A. Einn (treasurer). B. E. Clarke, A. G. Rabbits, C. K. Goodin, P. L. Beere. R. Williams and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. An apology for .absence was received from Mr Stark. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to Mr Williams, a newly-elec-ted member, and said that he felt sure that Mr Williams would be an acquisition to the committee. Nomination forms ®vere received from fne Education Board in connection witn the election of members of the board. It was resolved to nominate Mr A. Donald, of Masterton, the present Wairarapa member on the Board. The Education Board wrote relative to the committee’s application for an additional grant for incidental expenses, stating that the matter would receive the board's attention. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., acknowledged receipt of a letter from the committee in regard to using his endeavours to have the promised infant school erected. Mr H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, notified the receipt of a letter relative to the infant school, stating that every consideration would be given to the erection of an infants' department at the school. A further letter stated that the Minister did not see any possibility at present of starting the work. It was reported that board members would visit the school shortly when members of the committee would meet them. It was agreed that the importance of having the infants school erected should be stressed. Committeemen were of opinion that the rooms in the present school were far too small for the number of pupils attending. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the general account of £4B and in the special account £l7. Accounts amounting to £23 18s 4d were passed for payment. The chairman mentioned that he had been approached in regard to grazing the football ground -at the southern end of the school and asked for the opinion of committeemen on the matter. It was finally decided that tenders be called for the grazing for a period of four months subject to the approval of Mr H. T. Leete, the same to be advertised in the “Wairarapa Times-Age” and that the chairman and' secretary be a committee to finalise the tenders. The headmaster’s report showed that for the first term the primary roll was 368 and the secondary 52. . For the second term 374 pupils were registered on the primary roll and 54 on the secondary. There had been an absence of epidemics, and the attendances were very good. Mr Johnston and the new senior inspector, Mr S. Irwin, visited the school last week, mainly to report on the work of the probationary assistants.

Rainfall at Carrington

Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that the total rainfall for May was 5.20 inches. The heaviest fall was son the 9th, being 1.74 inches. There were thirteen wet days during the month. From' the beginning of the year up to the end of May, 19.71 inches have fallen. Social For The Soldiers. The residents of Ponatahi, Waihakeke and Parkvale are organising a social for soldiers of these districts who are at present in camp. For this purpose a meeting will be held at Parkvale Hall on June 11 to make the necessary arrangements. There is a considerable 7 number of soldiers from the districts named in camp. Personal. Mr Stark, who is to undergo an operation, has been granted leave of absence from the Carterton School Committee until he is well again. Act of Hooliganism. Some hooligan seriously damaged the fittings in the public, convenience in Holloway Street, Carterton, over- the weekend. The police have the matter in hand. Parcel Party for Bride-to-be. It is understood that a well-known Parkvale young lady,, who is shortly to be married, will be tendered a “parcel evening” in the Parkvale Hall in the near future. Scout Troop. A meeting of the Citizen’s Committee of the Carterton Scout Troop was held at the residence of Mr C. S. White, Rhodes Street, last evening. In the absence of the chairman, Mi- White was voted to the chair. It was resolved that the scout euchre tournaments be continued and that the whole of the net proceeds be donated to the Red Cross Society. It was decided the committee offer all the assistance possible to the Girl Guide Movement and to work in conjunction with the committee of that institution whenever possible. Rugbv Football. The senior game Greytown v. Masterton will be played at Carterton on Saturday.
