OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
BRITISH ORPHANS (To the Editor.) Sir, —Events in Britain make it more and more imperative ‘ that its orphans at least be snatched from the neighbourhood of impending horrors, that may leave an indelible impression on, young and innocent lives. All thoseC willing to adopt or take temporary < charge of one or more of these children are urged to secure questionnaires from Page’s, fill them in and return as soon as possible. The need for action is urgent:
The scheme launched in the Wairarapa (which may later be followed by more comprehensive schemes throughout New Zealand) is an opportunity of making a personal sacrifice, which in its turn may well prove a blessing, in order to relieve, in however small a measure, some of the- terrible burden under which Britain is at present staggering, in her fight against overwhelming odds for our freedom. Owing to queries I have received I wish to make it clear that the responsibility of adoption, though preferable, is not necessary. The child may be offered a home for a period of time. In that case an older child would be chosen, for guardians should be responsible until the wage-earning age of 16 is reached. The questionnaire is a means of providing for individual preferences. '
If the scheme is carried to fruition it is hoped to set up a small selection committee in England, on which will be at least two New Zealanders with knowledge of conditions in this country. Thanking you for space — Yours, etc,
NINA A. R. BARRER. Masterton. June 4.
