Airman-Pilot E. Denbee, who arrived in Masterton on Friday on leave for the Newman —Denbee wedding, flew back to Blenheim last night.
Mr O. Cadwallader, of Greytown, has been re-elected unopposed as a director for the Wellington district on the New Zealand Dairy Association. The Rev H. Squires and Mr Armitage, of the City Mission, Wellington, were visitors to Masterton yesterday for the Newman—Denbee wedding. Mr A. H. Stubbings, R.N.Z.A.F., of Masterton, has received advice that he has been granted a Commission and has been promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer. He will be stationed at the Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch. Mr R. P. V. Hayter has been elected president of the Auckland Provincial District Local Authority Officers’ Union in place of Mr H. T. Reiman, formerly Mayor of New Lynn, who is serving with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel (Masterton) were—Messrs J. Gamboi (Christchurch), L. Cooksley (Otaki), J. Blinkhorn (Palmerston North), R. E. Shawcrass, W. Earnshaw, R. J. Jones, G. H. Wood, F. Gilbert, O. W. Foote, W. B. Burrell (Wellington). The Wellington Caledonian Society has elected the following officers for the ensuing year:—Chief, Mr R. H. Nimmo (tenth year); chieftains, Messrs C. Stewart, D. Clark, W. Smith, Senr., J. D. McDonald, J. Stirling; secretary, Mr M. Gray Nasmith; treasurer, Mr R. K. Clark; directors, Mrs Baudinet. Messrs D. Clark, A. Barclay, H. Clark, C. Stewart, R. H. Nimmo, A. B. McWhinnie, M. A well-known Napier citizen, Mr John McConnell, died recently, aged 75. Mr McConnell was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand as a young man. He had lived in Westshore for about 50 years and had been active in every movement, social, educational and religious, for the benefit of that district. He was chairman of the Westshore hall committee, and chairman of the school committee. He was one of the promoters of the old Hawke’s Bay Highland Society, of which he was chieftain, and he was practically the founder of the Pou Caledonian Society, of which he was the first chief.
An old resident of Wanganui, Mr E. R. Morgan, Aramoho, died yesterday, aged 85. Mr Morgan was born in New Plymouth, but went to Wanganui when a baby, and had lived there nearly all his life. He \Vhs the oldest Druid in New Zealand. He was formerly a Government valuer, and a farmer. In March he celebrated his diamond wedding and up to about a fortnight ago was ’in good health. Mr Morgan, was an original member of the Kaitoke Road Board. He is survived by his wife and two sons and two daughters, Messrs W. E. Morgan (Nukumaru), and S. J. Morgan (Ohakune), and Mrs J. W. Masters (Feilding), and Mrs A. B. Laird (Wanganui).
Mr Alexander Black, who established the "Pahiatua Star” in the late eighties, died at New Plymouth on Friday at the age of 89. The deceased who was born at New Plymouth, served his apprenticeship on the “Taranaki Herald.” He took part in the Maori War. and later started a paper at Patea. Thence he proceeded to Pahiatua, where he took a prominent part in pioneering work. He was the foreman of the jury at the inquest on the victims of the Naylor poisoning case in 1891. He was a very old iiecmason and a keen bowler. For many years he has lived in retirement in New Plymouteh. He is survived by a widow, two sons and two daughters.
