DEFENCE OF CALAIS

GARRISON ISOLATED BUT STILL HOLDING CITADEL. PROVISIONED AND -SUPPORTED BY AIR FORCE. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) PARIS. June 2. A military spokesman said a British detachment has been holding out for a week in the three hundred year old citadel on the west side of Calais and is still resisting. The spokesman added that, among the many dramatic episodes of campaign in northern France, the defence of the citadel is one of the most outstanding. The Allied detachment, composed mainly of British troops, withdrew behind the old walls of the citadel after defending the town and port and is now holding off greatly superior German forces. The little garrison is still being provisioned by parachute and is supported by the Air Force. No details of this heroic defence have reached military circles because the garrison is completely cut off.
