PLEDGES OF SUPPORT
AUSTRALIAN WAR EFFORT GREAT PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION IN SYDNEY. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ LEAD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) SYDNEY. June 2. Forty thousand men and women at a meeting in the domain this afternoon under the auspices of the newly-form-ed ex-Servicemen’s War Emergency Association pledged themselves to use every effort to stimulate the national war effort, assist the Government effectively to mobilise national resources in man-power and materials and to create a vigilance organisation, to protect the country from aliens, traitors and profiteers. The Federal Government will call for 60,000 volunteers to form a national service guard for the defence of vital points. Men who are not eligible for active service, but who are prepared to handle a rifle are wanted. The guard will be under the orders of the Commissioner of Police m each State, not under military command.
