WANGANUI
CENTURY HURDLES WON BY OLD SURREY. STEEPLES TO LADY CALLAGHAN. The win of Old Surrey, ridden by the veteran horseman, Alan McDonald, was the feature of the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Ridden with splendid judgment Old Surrey won all the way. His most dangerous rival. Clarion Cali, fell when making an effort five furlongs from home. The Grandstand Steeplechase was also won from end to end by Lady Callaghan and the principal flat races, the Connolly Handicap and the Winter Oats, were won respectively by Dark Eagle and Lord Cavendish. There was a good attendance, but the totalisator figures failed to reach those of the corresponding day last year, being £17,396 10s compared with £20,341 10s, a decrease of £2945. The win of Old Surrey in the Century Hurdles Race at Wanganui on Saturday was a popular one. Allowing Old Surrey, who is a free goer, to stride along boldly in the first stages of the race McDonald soon had a break on the others (headed by Curie) of 15 to 20 lengths. Clarion Call had ranged up alongside Curie in second place on the rails with a mile to go, and they reduced Old Surrey's lead, but Curie was again a clear second down the back the last time. At the fence by the five, however, Clarion Call was again pushed up on the rails into second place,-and, taking off a little too soon, he fell heavily. This left Old Surrey two or three lengths clear of Curie, and although the latter closed the gap at the second last fence, Old Surrey, who had been given a breather in the middle stages, ran on the better over the last fence and scored a nice win. Brigadorc was a poor third, clear of Blue Tiger, and Student Prince was always a long way in the rear, moving very scratchily. Whirr's Bad Luck. Whirr looked a sure winner when well clear of the field in the Otago Steeples, at the Dunedin meeting on Saturday, when he lost his rider through slipping into the sod wall and ditch about a mile from home. Ballybrit then did best of those standing up, but Whirr looks sure to retrieve his bad luck.
