SENSOR CHAMPIONSHIP
RED STAR v GREYTOWN.
Greytown scored a good win over Red Star by 12 points to 6 in a bright, fast, open game on the Memorial Park .ground. The game was clean and contested in a sportsmanlike spirit. On the day Greytown were a very fit team and fully exploited their advantages. Greytown’s first score came from a brilliant try by S. Brunton in the first few minutes of the game. Fortunes fluctuated, and play went well down into Greytown territory when W. Percy kicked a penalty for Red Star, making the score 3 all. Rex Brunton notched a further 3 points for Greytown with a good penalty kick. The Stars equalised the score- when N. O'Kane, in a bright piece of work made an opening for W. Peterson, who raced away for the line to beat his opponents and finish off a fine movement. At halftime the score stood at 6 all. Resuming, Greytown pressed into Red Star’s twenty.five, where R. Brunton kicked his second penalty goal, placing Greytown in the lead. Greytown forged ahead to win the match when T. Sugrue crossed the Star line for a good try. . The teams were evenly matched in the forwards, but the Star backs were more dangerous, showing bettei combination. t Rex Brunton was the outstanding Greytown back, his efforts always being very sound. S. Brunton and T. Sugrue were also responsible for some fine movements. There was little difference in the Greytown forwards, all working’ well. Humphries and Conwell were seen to advantage. N. O'Kane and W. Peterson showed up in the Star back line, working with cohesion to make many dangerous moves. D. O’Connor worked well in the Star forwards until he went off injured. His place was taken by S. Lamb. Star fullback. Lamb played a very sound game and was outstanding in loose play. P. Clarke. Star's half back, played a decidedly improved game. His passing was more accurate and speedy than hitherto, resulting in smooth back line movements.
Mr B. M. Hurley controlled the game in an efficient manner.
GLADSTONE v MAS I ESTON.
A FAST EXHIBITION.
Gladstone beat Masterton by 13 points to nil in a fast exhibition at Gladstone. Gladstone’s forwards exploited fast breaking tactics with signal success. In the first half play was of an even character, the first score being for Gladstone, when G. Colquhoun crossed the line for a good try. Reiri’s kick was successful. In the second half E. Henderson scored from a line-out handy to Masterton's goal, line, placing Gladstone 8 points in the lead. Gladstone’s other points came from a try by K. Joblin. which was converted by Foreman from a very difficult angle.
Masterton had the advantage in the set scrums, but in the second spell were handicapped badly when their full back, B. Workman, retired hurt, resulting in a re-shuffle of the team. Masterton's forwards worked with a will, H. Ewington. I. Percy and Condon going particularly well. M. Bragginswas outstanding at half back. Masterton’s winger, V. Gray, was starved of the ball.
For Gladstone G. Colquhoun’s kicking was very effective. E. Henderson on the wing was always well to the fore and brought off some nice movements. The pick of the forwards were M. Ross and K. Joblin. Mi’ E. Grantham was referee. CARTERTON v OLD BOYS. Carterton beat Old Boys at Carterton by 22 points to 5 in a fairly fast game. Carterton's first score came from E. Thompson, after several men had handled the ball. Despite Old Boys' determined efforts the Carterton backs went into action again when Fitgerald sent the ball on lo Brown, who passed to Reading, the latter scoring Carterton's second try. Mahupuka failed to. convert. From the kick out Old Boys, headed by Wingate. Faulknor, and Laing broke away and the effort gave promise of being successful but Brown tackled Parsonson solidly and flic rush was stopped. Old Boys were awarded a free kick for a scrum infringement and O'Callaghan had a shot at goal which failed. Parsonson found the linewell into Carterton territory and from] the lino out Old Boys looked danger-: ous. Frank Fitzgerald relieved by finding the line with a well judged kick. Carterton got the ball from the line out and Joe Fitzgerald broke away. The ball went through several hands i to Taylor who knocked on. From the I scrum Tilyard sent Mahupuka away, the effort breaking down at Thompson,
who spoiled a good rush. Old Boys still failed to ward off Carterton, and '• Reading again crossed the line. Mahupuka's kick was successful, making the. score Carterton 11', Old Boys 0. From ‘ a series of scrums Fitzgerald went over for Carterton, placing Carterton 1G points in the lead. Old Boys’ first’ score came from D. Faulknor, who touched down well out. O’Callaghan’s kick, from a difficult angle, was successful.
In the second spell, Taylor (Carterton) scored twice, making the score Carterton 22, Old Boys 5. In the later stages of the game Taylor was ordered off. Mr A. McKay was referee. IN OTHER CENTRES Wellington.—The defeat of the leading team, Johnsonville, and Wellington’s brilliant form against Petone were the outstanding features of Saturday's senior first division Rugby fixtures in Wellington.
