RUGBY FOOTBALL
WAIRARAPA UNION STANDARD OF PLAY IMPROVES. GLADSTONE STILL IN THE LEAD. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championship fixtures were continued in perfect weather on Saturday. The grounds were in splendid order. Gladstone, the leaders in the senior competition, emerged victorious in a fast contest with Masterton at Gladstone to remain undefeated. Greytown had a well deserved win over Red Star in a bright exhibition on the Memorial Park. Carterton were too strong for Old Boys. A general improvement in the standard of play was apparent, but a great many players have not yet attained the necessary fitness. At Memorial Park over the past fortnight the attendance of the public has been poor. The expected fall in the standard of play, with so many men away-with the Forces has not materialised, and taken all through the matches on the main local ground have been of a good standard. RESULTS AT A GLANCE SENIOR. Greytown 12, Red Star 6. Carterton 22, Old Boys 5. Gladstone 13, Masterton 0. JUNIOR. Carterton 19, Red Star 3. Featherston 18, Martinborough 8. THIRDS. Masterton 13, Dalefield 6. College 6, Red Star 5. FOURTHS. Masterton 5, College 3. Carterton 0, Martinborough 0.
