CARTERTON

POWER BOARD MR PEARCE RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board yesterday afternoon the chairman, Mr H, Campbell Pearce and the managing-secre-tary,' Mr Geo Brown, were appointed delegates to attend the annual Power —Beards’ Conference, and also the ank hual meeting of the Power Boards’ In’dustrial Union of Employers. Mr Brown and the chief engineer. Mr H. B. Keenan, were appointed representatives to attend the annual conference of Power Board engineers . A letter was received from the Power Board’s Association, relating to proposals to regulate the level of wages in accordance with the cost of living. The matter was left in the hands of the board’s delegates to consider at the conference. It was resolved to instal a cash register and receipting machine in the ■ Masterton Office. The matter of fixing a minimum stock which would cover the board’s requirements for maintenance, replacements, unavoidable reconstruction, and to deal with any major damage or event, for a period of at least two years without encroaching., on the stocks at any time for new work or avoidable reconstruction, received consideration. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the managing-secretary. At the close of the monthly meeting the annual meeting of the board was held. Mr Geo Brown presided. On the motion of Mr Holmes, seconded by Mr H. P. Hugo, Mr Pearce was reelected. Mr Pearce suitably returned thanks. Messrs H. P. Hugo, W. Howard Booth and the chairman were re-elect-ed an executive committee for the ensuing year.

YOUNG FARMERS DEBATE

WIN FOR CARTERTON. The members of the Carterton and Featherston Young Farmers’ Club held a debate on the subject “That Supplying a Butter Factory is a Better Proposition Than Supplying a Cheese Factory.” The judge (Mr E. The cheque for the amount was handed in to the Red Cross Society this morning. Baby Carnival. Mr Hill, the New Zealand organiser of St John Ambulance Society, was in Carterton this morning arranging for the screening of the six babies who took part in the contest in Carterton, Masterton, Pahiatua and Dannevirke. The pictures of these babies will be thrown on the screen at the towns mentioned, and voting will com-

mence on June 4 for a period of 14 days. This will decide the district winner, and the district choice will compete against other North Island winners. The finals for the New Zealand title will be between the successful North and South Island babies. In conversation with a “Times-Age” representative Mr Hill said he had photographed 14.000 babies throughout New Zealand.
