REPORTER ADMITTED

TO SECRET COMMITTEE. A reporter went recently to attend a. Press conference at one of the British Ministries (says “Newspaper News”). He produced his press pass and was shown to the room by several messengers in turn. He was surprised, however, to find that he knew no one among the others present, and to notice that they were all elderly, but he handed his card to a reception clerk, was given a seat at a long table, the right chairman arrived, and the meeting started. Then he noticed the “dossiers" marked “secret” on the table, and as the minutes of the last meeting were read he realised with alarm that he had blundered into a private meeting of a Government Committee. His anxiety increased as he discovered a number of State secrets.

At last he wrote a note explaining his position, passed it along the table to the chairman, and waited to be denounced. But in a minute a reply returned, thanking him for making his presence known and giving him permission to withdraw. As he hurried out the chairman beckoned him, and whispered: “Tomorrow, old man—same room, same time.”
