DEFENCE OF CALAIS

HEROIC BRITISH GARRISON PORT HELD FOR DAYS AGAINST'HEAVY ATTACKS. VALUABLE HELP TO MAIN BODY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.27 a.m.) RUGBY, May 30. The War Office announces: “Last week a small British force was sent to hold Calais and attempt to maintain communication with the British Expeditionary Force. Finding itself unable to carry out the latter task in face of strong enemy mechanised forces, it concentrated on the defence of Calais.

Despite repeated attacks by the enemy and continuous air and artillery bombardment, the garrison held out for several days. By its refusal to surrender, it detained large numbers of the enemy and was of invaluable assistance to the main body of the British Expeditionary Force in its withdrawal on Dunkirk. This action , will count among the most heroic deeds in the annals of the British Army.
