The financial statement showed a credit balance of £360 4s lOd remaining at the Bank of New Zealand, in the l district fund, and a credit balance of £177 2s 7d in the Gas Works account. < Accounts for £577 10s 8d (district fund) and £3lB 9s 8d (gasworks) were passed. Councillors expressed apprehension at the amount of rates outstanding, and it was decided that some form/of action be taken to recover rates outstanding after twelve months. “We are sinking deeper into the mire,” stated Councillor Mortenson, in urging more intensive action. “It is not fair to those paying their rates,” stated Councillor DeLacey. Mr Taverner pointed out that it was the usual practice of local bodies to wait until the debt was nearly debarred by statute, before taking action to recover rates. The New Zealand Crippled Children Society wrote enclosing the annual report and balance sheet for the current year, and asking for a grant. It was decided to make a grant of £5 5s from the Mayor’s Relief Fund. The Carterton Volunteer Fire Bri- • gade wrote asking that the ..annual grant be increased to £3O. The letter was received. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the gas committee to con- ■ serve coke supplies during the summer months for the benefit of consumers in the winter months. It was pointed out that there was an acute shortage of coke supplies, chiefly owing to coke being supplied to reout of the district, in the sunikvjr months.
