LARGE AREA IN CHUNGKING ATTACKED

One hundred Japanese planes dropped 500 bombs over a mile square area in Chungking, in which the key Government organisations and foreign embassies are situated. It is estimated that 1000 persons were killed or wounded. Seven hundred houses were demolished and a thousand damaged, including the Russian and French Embassies. GUNBOAT’S ESCAPE BOMB FALLS NEAR AMERICAN WARSHIP. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) CHUNGKING, May 28. A heavy bomb fell within 100 yards but did not damage the Untied States gunboat Tutuila, which is a river patrol vessel similar to the Panay. ■lt is believed that none of the 600 foreign residents in Chungking was injured.
