FEATHERSTON
SICK, AND WOUNDED FUND SPLENDID WORK BY CANVASSERS ("Times-Age' - Special.) The Featherston District Committee reports that excellent work is being carried out throughout the district by canvassers and helpers to raise funds m connection with the Sick, Wounded and Distressed Appeal. Since the opening of the appeal, the Pahautea-Kahutara committee has held two dances and euchre parties at Pahautea and one at Kahutara; South Featherston has held two socials; Waiorongomai has organised three socials and numerous functions have been held in Featherston. Cross Creek is working quietly but successfully in raising funds. All zones helped to make the shop day last Friday the success it was. Some idea of the work involved in canvassing rural areas in that in connection with the Pahautea-Kahutara district. The official canvassers, Messrs S. Grant and J. Juno, covered over 300 miles taking 4i days to complete the canvass.
Already the sum of £649 14s Old has been received by the district treasurer. This would not have been possible, but for the close co-operation of all zones in the district.
In some quarters it is thought that this appeal is for the local branch of the Red Cross Society. All amounts raised between May 12 and June 3 will go to the Sick. Wounded and Distress Fund Appeal, the aim of which is to secure £250,000. The amounts collected in each zone are as follows: —Featherston zone: Collected (J. W. Holland), £6 0s 6d; collected (S. Slocombe), £l3 5s 6d; collected (T. Hardie), £l5 18s; cards (Dr Sharp), £9 6s; cards (per Mrs Rea), £5 14s 6d; dance (National Party), £6O 12s 3d; Mannequin Parade (H. Clark), £lO Ils 6d; share'of shop day, £26 18s 2Jd; total £l4B 6s 5Jd. South Featherston, Kaiwaiwai, Tauherenikau zone: Donations, £210; South Featherston Social Committee, £2O 18s 61d; share shop day, £26, total £256 18s 6|d. Western Lake zone—Collected (J. E. Willett), £2l Ils 6d; Waiorongomai Socials, £32 5s 9d; share of shop day, £26; total. £79 17s 3d; Pa-hautea-Kahutara zone:—Collected (S. Grant and J. Juno), £llO 12s 9d; dance and euchre party at Pahautea, £22 Ils 2£d; dance, at Kahutara, £5 7s 10d; share of shop day, £26, total £164 11s 9|d.
There was a good attendance at the card party held at the residence of Mr and Mrs R. W. Matthews, Waiorongomai on Saturday night. The prizewinners were: Ladies, Mrs Willett 1, Miss B. Sharp (consolation); men, Mr S. Williams 1, Mr Cole (consolation).
The winners of the various competitions were: cake, Mrs F. Talbot; cushion, Mrs McNabb; duchess set. Mrs A. Devonport; pair bath towels, Mrs Arthur. A number of articles were sold by the auctioneer, Mrs Roxburgh. A mock court proved very entertaining. Euchre Party and Dance. There was a fair attendance at the Euchre Party and dance held in the Pahautea Hall on Saturday night. The card winners were: —Ladies, Mrs Connell, 1; Miss N. Cade, 2. Men, Mr Elbe 1; Mr Cade 2. Personal. Mrs P. Galbraith, Christchurch, is visiting her mother, Mrs G. M. Browne.
