Conditions underfoot and overhead were ideal on Saturday for the three games played at Greytown, where the local teams emerged with much more credit than they had the previous week.
The juniors played a much improved game. They stayed in their positions much better, and the team as a whole was better balanced. The chief weakness was on the left wing and this took a good deal out of the sting of the forward line. Wherever any one forward player does not play up in line with his comrades; wherever a forward hangs back instead of diving at the ball to tackle with all his might; wherever a forward thinks he ought to be in the half-back line, there the breakdown occurs. This forward line has not yet gained real cohesion. All of them know where to pass the ball, and they did it well as a whole. But they fail as yet in letting the ball get beyond the control of their stick. A forward who hits a ball and then has to run ten to fifteen yards to recover it, is only running himself, off his legs, and robbing his forward line of possession of the ball. The forward line that wins is not that set of individuals who spend their time dashing backwards and forwards between the two twenty-fives but the line that carries the ball with it by skilful short passing which baffles and disorganises the backs. Anker as captain makes a very good pivot. He is learning to pass the ball nicely. Dawber is very dangerous in the circle but tries too much angle shooting. Skeet is a good forward in any position, but would do better if he could control the ball more. lan McKenzie was back in his old position at right half and made a good job of it. Harris and Humphries also did well.
