RED CROSS APPEAL

MORE DONATIONS RECEIVED. STOCK SALE ON WEDNESDAY. Further donations and promises of support have been received during the. weekend by the local committee conducting the Sick, Wounded and Distressed Fund appeal of the Order of St John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society.

The stock sale, to take place on Wednesday next, promises to be of considerable size and it is hoped that the results will compare favourably with the amount of work done by those responsible for the huge task of organising this effort. In the Tinui district alone contributions of stock and cash are expected to total £250. The members of the Carriers’ Association have donated their services for the collection of stock free of charge. Stock will be collected tomorrow for the sale on Wednesday. In addition to donations to the special appeal, large amounts of material and also cash offers have been pouring in to the local Red Cross circle who are working endlessly and enthusiastically mending, altering and making garments for those in need. At the Appeal Office, many people who were missed by the collectors are bringing donations in and there is still time for others to do the same. One lady said she would give all she could, a gold ring for sale. Members of the Masterton Nursery Division wish to thank members of the Wairarapa branch of the Solway Old Girls’ Association for a donation of £5 for the Red Cross and Order of St John joint appeal for the Sick and Wounded fund. The donation was the proceeds of a dance held on May 1. At noon today the local total had reached £1,518 7s 7d.

STREET APPEAL. SALE IN MASTERTON ON WEDNESDAY. In furtherance of the Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance appeal for the Sick and Wounded Fund, a street appeal will be held in Masterton on Wednesday. Badges will be sold and it is hoped that the funds will be considerably increased by this effort. In Wellington a sum of £2600 was raised by this means. Lady members of the St John Ambulance and the Red Cross Society will conduct the sale.
