RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIRARAPA UNION

SATURDAY’S GAMES. GLADSTONE STILL UNBEATEN. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championship fixtures were advanced a further stage on Saturday, when the leaders, Gladstone, maintained their unbroken winning run this season, beating Red Star in a grim struggle at Carterton. Masterton prevailed over Old Boys by the margin of one point. Carterton beat Greytown, at Greytown in a hard, even game. As the placing of the ball in the scrum by the referees had been ruled illegal by the New Zealand Union, the old practise was reverted to. The standard of play was quite fair in most of the games, in keeping with an improvement in physical fitness. RESULTS AT A GLANCE SENIOR. Gladstone 22, Red Star 6. Masterton 5, Old Boys 4. Carterton 13, Greytown 9. JUNIOR. Featherston 13, Red Star 7. Carterton 8, Old Boys 3. THIRDS. Gladstone 6, Masterton 5. > College 19, Carterton 5. ’ Featherston 15, Greytown 0. Red Star 16, Dalefield 5. FOURTHS. Masterton 6, Carterton 3. College 50, Red Star 0. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP MASTERTON BEAT OLD BOYS. FAIR STANDARD OF PLAY. The standard of play was only fair when Masterton beat Old Boys 5 points to 4 at Memorial Park. Old Boys failed to cross the Masterton goal line. Considerable comment arose from the awarding of a field goal to Old Boys by the referee, as the ball was alleged to have fallen short of the posts. An appeal by Masterton against the decision was not upheld. The only try of the match was a brilliant piece of work by W. Barnett, when he took the ball from Taylor (Masterton) to cross the line for Masterton in a solo run. Ewington's kick was successful.

The Masterton forwards were strong in spoiling tactics and were responsible for some dangerous rushes. The back line of either team did not function very smoothly, the chief fault being bad passing. Territorially, Masterton appeared to hold a marked advantage. Making good use of the wind in the first half Masterton held on in the second half to stem many dangerous moves.

O'Callaghan, the Old Boys’ full back, was always safe. Ewington, Gray. Percy and Barnett were all solid workers for Masterton. D. and N. Faulknor were responsible for some good movements for Old Boys. Mr B. M. Hurley was referee. CARTERTON BEAT GREYTOWN. HARD AND EVEN MATCH. Carterton beat Greytown by 13 points to 9 in a hard even tussle at Greytown. Brunton kicked three penalties for Greytown. From the start it was evident that the game would develop into a solid, even game. Mr AV. Grantham was an efficient referee. GLADSTONE BEAT RED STAR. DESPERATE TUSSLE AT CARTERTON. Gladstone beat Red Star by 22 points to 6 at Carterton. The game was hard fought throughout, and was not without incident. There was much indiscriminate kicking and the tempers became very frayed at times. In the first spell Gladstone crossed the Star line twice, Reiri and Joblin scoring. In the second half Rippon scored for Stars from a back passing rush, making a very determined run. Stars next try came from the outstanding Star back, Mowatt, who cut through the opposing team before passing to W. Peterson, who finished off a brilliant piece of work. Gladstone came into their own in the latter stages of the game and launched a fierce assault. As a result Gladstone added 12 points to their score. W. Bubb, C. Wyeth, S. Henderson and I. Mason scored for Gladstone in the second half. For Red Star Henson was very safe at full back, his efforts resulting in many strong forward attacks being fended off. Joblin, a Gladstone forward, was conspicuous for some outstanding work. G. Colquhoun impressed at fiveeighths in the Gladstone back line. Mr Percy Reid was referee.
