REMARKABLE ESCAPE
TROTSKY & HIS WIFE BEDROMM MACHINE-GUNNED FOR 15 MINUTES. INCENDIARY LIQUID ALSO THROWN IN. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day. 11.25 a.m.) MEXICO CITY, May 24. M. Trotsky alleged that the attack made upon his house by men armed with machine-guns was “organised by the Ogpu under Stalin’s direct supervision.” He said he and his wife Natalia escaped by an inspired sixth sense, rolling out of their beds to the floor. It was discovered later that one bullet had pierced the pillow where Trotsky’s head had lain.
The raiders, after binding five policemen who were stationed in the grounds, machine-gunned the bedroom for a quarter of an hour. They also hurled in thermos bottles containing an incendiary liquid, starting two fires which Natalia extinguished with blankets.
