EARLY PEAS

MAY BE SOWN IN NEXT FEW WEEKS.

A sowing of early peas may be made during the next few weeks, provided a fairly well sheltered and well drained situation is chosen. If possible, the site should be sheltered from the cold quarter by a wall or fence. If the soil has been already trenched and manurt ed for a previous crop, so much the better.

Dig a shallow trench the width of a spade and about six inches deep. In the bottom spread an inch or two of gritty sand and on this sow the seeds. Cover with about two inches of fine soil, leaving the surface of the trench some three inches.below the surrounding soil level. As mice are often troublesome during winter, it is advisable to moisten the seeds with a spot of kerosene, then roll them in red lead. As soon as the seedlings appear. place some twiggy sticks along the sides of the rows.
