CARTERTON

COUNTY AFFAIRS FURTHER BUSINESS AT MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday afternoon the meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was continued. It was reported that the Wairarapa Hospital rate was approximately the same as last year, £2905 being the County’s tentative amount. A letter was received from the Crippled Children's Society soliciting assistance from the county. It was resolved to make a grant of £5. Notice is to be sent to a settler on the Maungaterere Valley Road, to keep his stock off the county roads. Four tenders were received for the erection of a bridge across the Makahaka Stream on the Carterton-Glad-stone highway, and it was decided that the tender of Rhodes and McPherson at £1771 16s be accepted, subject to the approval of the Public Works Department. The estimates for the current year were fully considered and in some instances amended. Motor Tests. Traffic Officer Nicholson had a very busy day yesterday putting motor drivers over the age of 70 years through a series of tests. Church Services. A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke on Sunday at 2 o’clock. A special day of prayer will be held in St. Mark’s Anglican Church, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Methodist Church and the Salvation Army Hall on Sunday. After church a combined service vzill be held in the Regent Theatre, when the whole of the ministers will take a part. Basketball Team.
