Mr R. A. Beveridge has been elected president of the Christchurch Rotary Club and the Rev A. C. Watson vicepresident.
Mr D. W. Russell has been elected president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association and Mr C. Miln vice-president. The Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, who has been visiting the West Coast of the South Island, will return to Wellington today. The Hon A. Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, who is visiting the South Island, is expected to return to Wellington by aeroplane today. The funeral of the late Mrs E. R. Ward took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, the service at the residence and that at the graveside being conducted by the Rev John Davie. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. J., W. L. and E. A. Holloway, A. W. and R. J. Pike, and M. Quayle. Mr R. W. Bothamley was elected chairman of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board at the annual meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Bothamley was proposed for the chairmanship by Mr G. London, the retiring chairman, who attended the meetingin military uniform, and who declined nomination for a further term. Mr L. Stewart seconded Mr Bothamley's nomination. A motion by Mr A. Walker that Mr J. W. Andrews (formerly of Masterton) be elected chairman failed to find a seconder. Mr Andrews then proposed that Mr P. Dowse be elected chairman, the motion being seconded by Mr R. G. Stephen. On a ballot being taken. Mr Bothamley was elected by six votes to five.
