Yesterday afternoon Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., a member of the National Production Council, met the representatives of seven local factories around Carterton and explained to them the urgent necessity of doing all possible to increase production for the coming season. Dealing with the fertiliser question. Mr Roberts explained the causes of delay and the steps the National Council had taken to maintain superphosphate supplies for the future. The fertiliser companies had increased production considerably, having delivered 65,000 tons more than last season. The Auckland works were three weeks behind with deliv-
ery; and the southern part of the North ' Z Wi'and thirteen weeks behind, but good progress was now being made. The whole of the works in New Zealand would be working full time, evenif it necessitated the transfer of manure from the South Island to the North Island at peak periods and a transfer back to peak periods to the South Island. Considerable discussion took place regarding pig production and it was agreed that the best way of helping the cause of the Allies was a drive for more pig meat, especially since Denmark had been eliminated. The consensus of opinion was that if every farmer, large or small,, endeavoured to increase production by the better feeding of stock, better farming, rearing more pigs and heifer calves of good strain, the total of national production in the aggregate would be very considerable. The following resolution was carried unanimously; “That this meeting representing the dairy companies of the district, recognising the life and death struggle that the British Empire is engaged in. pledges itself individually and collectively to do all it can to increase production, especially in pig meat.” Combined Ball.
A combined ball conducted by Carterton branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Young Farmers’ Club will be held in the King's Theatre, Carterton, on Monday, June 10. Every effort is to be made to ensure that the ball will be the outstanding event of the season. Strong committees have been formed to carry out the arrangements. Udy’s Dance Band will provide the music. The prices are advertised and the joint secretaries are Mrs A. Stretton and Mr H. McKenzie.

At the Clareville racecourse this morning Mr V. D. Clutterbuck, who trains Mrs K. L. Page’s racehorses, met with an accident. Mr Clutterbuck, who sustained a bad scalp wound and abrasions, was attended by Dr W. J. C. Wells.
