CHINESE DENIAL
NO PEACE NEGOTIATIONS WITH JAPAN RAIDING BOMBERS SHOT DOWN. SUCCESSES CLAIMED IN OTHER AREAS. 3y Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 20. The “New York Times” Chungking correspondent says a Government spokesman categorically denied the reports (published yesterday) of Sino-Japanese peace negotiations. It is rumoured at the same time that Germany is manifesting interest in the settlement of the Sino-Japanese conflict and may mediate. The Chinese retaliated on May 19 and 20 against Japanese night bombing in Szechuan and claimed to have shot down seven out of 27 bombers raiding Liangsha, in East Szechuan, after Chinese bombing and machinegunning attacks against Japanese concentrations at Suisien. The Chinese also claim to have recaptured Hysyinyang, the main Japanese base in Southern Honan and continue to wipe out Japanese forces, reported to be demoralised on the Honan-Hupeh border.
