BABY CARNIVAL LOCAL COMPETITOR THE WINNER. -. ("Times-Age” Special.) ■i, There was a very large crowd at the Regent Theatre last, night when the ''“'SAy Carnival was brought to a successful conclusion. The winners were announced as follows: — No. 24, Jean Clarke (Carterton), 1932 votes, 1. No. 12, Marion Morgan (Greytown), 1963 votes, 2. No. 11, Alan Pickard (Greytown), 1088 votes, 3. No. 51, Barbara Brown (Carterton), 932 votes, 4. No. 6, Barbara Pointon (Carterton), 877 votes, 5. No. 13, John. Hughes (Carterton), 51a votes, 6. The winning baby was crowned by the Mayoress (Mrs D. L. Taverner) amid a scene of enthusiasm. A cake donated by Mr C. F. Stevens was presented to the mother of the winning baby. The mother of each baby was presented with a posy, and a briquet made by Mrs Tankersley was presented to the Mayoress. Mrs Tankersley made the bouquets and all the posies. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL WAIRARAPA P.G. LODGE. The quarterly meeting of Loyal Wairarapa Past Grands’ Lodge of Odd Fellows was held at Martinborough last evening. There was a good attendance of members over which P.G. Bro. W. A. Palmer presided. Apologies for absence were received from Bros. -E. Mooney, H. Knowles, L. George, F. de la Cour, and H. J. Rathbone. A resignation from membership was received and accepted with regret. An invitation was received from Loyal Tararua Lodge of Past Grands, Pahiatua, to attend their next meeting, which is to be held at Pahiatua on June 5, when visitors will be present from the Loyal Dannevirke and Manawatu P.G. Lodges. The invitation was accepted, and the secretary was authorised to write to Bro. L. W. Kitchen notifying him that Wairarapa ■would be represented by at least 12 -, members. '** Accounts amounting to 7s 6d were passed for payment. P.G’s. Bros. Farrow, Baikie and Bruce were congratulated upon having been elected to a seat on the Welling-, ton District Management Committee. The nomination of officers resulted as follows: —President, Sister Mellish and Bro. Harris; vice-president, Bros. Tankersley, Mooney, Harris, Preston, Rathbone and Sisters Mellish and Eagle; warden, Sisters Wilton, Mellish, Bros. Harris, Bruce, Tankersley, Baikie, Rathbone end Mooney; auditors, Bros. A. P. Smith and G. S. Bruce; ritual judges. Bros. C. J. DeLacey, R. Baikie and G. S. Bruce; trustee, Bro. A. R. Tankersley. The nomination of treasurer was held over till the annual meeting. It was resolved that the secretary write to the treasurer, Bro. A. H. Kra=> hagen, sympathising with him in his continued illness, and to express a wish for a speedy return to health. Supper was provided by the Loyal Martinborough Lodge. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB > ' MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club, the chairman, Mr A. Fisher, presided over a fair attendance of members. Further arrangements for the combined ball to be held on June 10 in conjunction with the W.D.F.U. and Farmers’ Union were made. Mr H. McKenzie was elected secretary for the ball. The resignation of Mr I. Thompson from the position of club secretary was accepted with regret. Mr B. Brassell was appointed to the vacancy. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr M. Thompson sympathising with him in his recent severe illness, and wishing him a speedy recovery. An inter-club debate with Featherston is to be held in Carterton towards "the end of the month. Two club debates were then held. The first being horses (L. Renall, A. Fisher, J. Rose); versus tractors (M. Knutson, R. McKenzie, F. Ward), and was won by the side upholding the tractors. The second, grassland farming (B. Brassell, J. Milne, T. Orr), versus cropping ,(W. Campin, A. Ordish, H. McKenzie), was won by the grassland farmers. The judge, Mr Koolman. was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Messrs B. Brassell, L. Renall and M. Knutson were selected to represent the club in the inter-club debates. Winter Feed Scarce. Dairy farmers are finding it difficult to obtain winter grazing for their cows. During the dry weather many farmers had to feed their winter fodder to their dairy herds. This has not been so noticeable on the western side of the Wairarapa as on the eastern side. Some farmers, it is understood, have had to seek their grazing as far afield as the Manawatu. Farmers complain that the cost of grazing has been advanced in price, and this together with the short of winter feed is going to be a heavy burden upon some. Fire Brigade Smoke Concert. The annual smoke concert in connection with the Carterton Fire Brigade will take place in the Fire Brigade Hall tomorrow evening. Visitors will be present from sister brigades in the Wairarapa, and from Hutt. Petone, Eketahuna and other centres.
Rainfall at Carrington. Mr. J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that the rainfall for March was was 4.02 inches. It rained on 17 days, and the heaviest fall was 90 points on April 26. The total rainfall for the past three months was as follows: — January. 4.49 ins., February, 3.54; March, 4.02, which is above the level registered for the same period last year. The rainfall for the past 24 hours was 1? inches. As a result of thisfall all the rivers in the district are carrying a heavy volume of water. Church Services. Church of England services will be held at Gladstone at 11 a.m., and Parkvale at 2 p.m. on Sunday. P. and A. Society. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa P. and Society will be held in Carterton, tomorrow at 10.30 a.m. There will be no election for officers, but there will be for the committee as 26 nominations have been received for 24 vacancies. Basketball. The Belvedere basketball club will be represented against Masterton Hospital tomorrow by the following:—J. Benge, D. Sewell, N. James, E. Garrett, M. Hedley, E. Jensen, J. Goodin, K.
