' LADIES' & MEN'S CONTESTS. ("Times-Age" Special.) There was a good attendance of ladies on the Featherston Golf Club s links yesterday afternoon when the first round of the Challenge Cup was played oil'. The results are as follew: Mrs Roy Donald 1; Mrs W. M. Connell 2; Mrs H. McCarty 3. Juniors, over 13 holes: Mrs Knutson 1; Mrs W. Jeffrey and Mrs Krack tied for second place. The men will play off for the second round in the medal competition on Saturday afternoon. As the greens are in excellent condition, due to the hard work put in by Mr H. Lovegrove, an enthusiastic member of the club, good scores arc anticipated. Euchre Evening. There was an exceptionally good attendance at.the weekly euchre tournament. held by the Haunui Croquet Club, in the Anzac Hall last evening, the results being as follow: Ladies, Mrs W. Mellish 1; Mrs M. Wilson 2. Men, R. J. Rae 1; Mrs A. W. Edwards (playing as man) 2. The aggregate prizes were awerded to Mrs H. Worsley and R. J. Rae. Mr R. J. Rae’s special prize was won by Mrs J. Rewai. P.W.M.U. Meeting. The monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. was held in the Presbyterian Hall yesterday, the president, Mrs R. S. Keenan, presiding over a good attendance. A paper on medical missionary work in hospitals in Jagadhri was read and discussed. Final arrangements were made in connection with a concert to be held in the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday, May 14, and also for a bring and buy sale on Friday, May 17, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to missionary funds. Afternoon tea was served at the conclusion of the meeting. Hockey. The local girls will be seen in action on their new grounds at the school on Saturday afternoon against College C, of Masterton. The game will be controlled by Mr F. J. Staples. Shooting Licences. The number of shooting licences issued to date by the local Post Office is 72 as compared with 108 issued for the whole season last. year. These figures are rather surprising when taking into account that the season is for a fortnight only, as compared with two months last year. Ducks and Swans. The local butchers are experiencing a rather "lean” time this week on account of the number of households feasting upon ducks and swans. Minor Accidents. Several minor accidents have been reported during duck shooting. One man had a lucky escape from what might have been a serious accident, when his cartridge blew out from his gun. and seared his hands and face. Another person was cutting flax, preparatory to tieing up his brace of ducks, when his knife slipped and cut his first two fingers of his left hand to the bone. Personal. Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd has returned from a brief visit to Havelock North. Miss Margaret Merlet, of Lower utt, is visiting her mother, Mrs F. E. Merlet.
