RED CROSS APPEAL
CAMPAIGN OPENING ON SUNDAY.
LOCAL ORGANISATION PLANS
An appeal by the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society for funds for the relief of those who are sick, wounded, or distressed as a result of the war opens officially on Sunday next May 12. the anniversary of the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Normally, the organisations named function separately, but in times of stress like those now ruling they pool their resources in a national effort. The local committee has been busy for some time planning its campaign and completing details for the full launching. The headquarters are in Page's Buildings, Perry Street; phone 1963.
The first activity of the committee is to be a house-to-house canvass, similar to that conducted by the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army and the following teams have been organised:— Red Cross. St. John’s Ambulance. Townswomen's Guild, St. Vincent de Paul. Salvation Army, St. Matthew's Ladies Guild. 40 nurses, and a team of business men organised by Mr. F. E. Wells.
The opening of the campaign will be marked by special church services at various churches, attended by nurses, St. John and Red Cross members in uniforms.
Once again Masterton people are being asked to open their purses and give freely to this deserving cause, thus keeping the district in the prominent position it gained in the previous campaign.
