The Chief of Naval Operations. Admiral Harold Stark, in a letter to Senator Allen Ellender. a member of the Naval Affairs Committee, disclosed that he would ask for Congressional appropriations to enable the immediate construction of the Navy to the authorised limit, thus adding 99.500 tons of battleships, 20,400 tons of plane-carriers, 81,849 tons of cruisers. 75.430 tons of destroyers and 22,455 tons of submarines. These, plus the 11 per cent, expansion now pending in Congress, would add a total of 490,360 tons, making the total of warships 1 444.915 tons.
