FEATHERSTON
THE SHOOTING SEASON
FAIR BAGS SECURED. ("Times-Age” Special.) All roads led ' to Wairarapa Lake during the weekend. The limousine with its luxurious caravan in tow, down to the tumble-down rattle-trap with all and sundry piled on, looking somewhat like a pacic of gipsies, were to be seen wending their way to the ever popular lakeside, in readiness for rhe big day. but alas! the much lookedfor moment dawned all too fine to encounter the big "bags” which were anticipated. The elements, however, very kindly obliged and “turned on” an "old man southerly” for the second day, when the ducks and swans fell victims to the deadly onslaughts. The blood thirsty sportsmen never tired of re-loading their guns, but the majority were satisfied with a moderate bag. From reports received to date the shooting has been only fair. Better bags having been recorded on the eastern side of the lake than on the western. Hockey. The hockey match which was to have taken place during the. weekend was postponed on account of the closing of the Exhibition. The girls are again showing an intense interest in the game and great things are expected from them this season. The club has acquired the use of the school grounds, where much work has been put in by a willing band of workers under the leadership of Mr F. J. Staples, who is untiring in his efforts for the club. Recently a number of players were seen vigorously raking the long dried grass off the field which had recently been cut, and stones have been removed. The ground promises to be one of the finest in the South Wairarapa. Wrestling. Mr Alex McLeod has reason to be proud of his “boys,” as they have certainly made a name for themselves in the wrestling world. Out of seven Wairarapa wrestling championships, the Featherston Club has secured five titles, as follows: Heavyweight, J. H. Dryuen; light-heavyweight, T. Reid; lightweight, G. Wenden; featherweight, D. Benton; bantamweight, M. Leighton. Personal Items. Miss Ella Till spent the weekend in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Bruce Donald have returned from a brief visit to the city. The many friends of Mr Wm. Johnson will be pleased to see him about again, having' recovered from an attack of influenza. Aircraftsman Viv. Bargh, who has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs C. Bargh, of Pihautea, has left for New Plymouth for further training. Misses Betty Smith, Brenda Bloxam, and Judith Sharp, have left for Havelock North, where they will attend a Guide instructional camp until May 14.
